Narrative
GARY, IN – A collision involving a train and a passenger vehicle fatally injured five people on Wednesday night in northeast Lake County.
The incident occurred shortly after 10 p.m. at the railroad crossing near the intersection of US-12 and East 7th Avenue on the east side of Gary. This is on the northwest side of Indiana, about 30 miles southeast of Chicago.
Police say that a southbound passenger vehicle carrying five people drove around the gate arms at the railroad crossing, entering the path of an eastbound South Shore Line train carrying at least 33 people.
The impact of the collision ejected all five passengers of the car, killing them at the scene. Authorities identified the victims as 24-year-old De’Mario Craig, 20-year-old Maurice Parrish, 21-year-old Bryon Towns, 20-year-old Sherise Parrish, and 20-year-old Latianna King.
None of the people on the train sustained injuries in the accident.
